The council can do a lot to create jobs with home insulation schemes.
As well as creating local jobs these reduce energy use, saving heating
bills, and giving people warm homes. Greens on local councils like Leicester
have got their councils to expand their insulation schemes.
Shopping
I would work to encourage local, independent retailers onto the high
street. Bedford could offer a unique shopping experience, not the same
chain stores you get in every town in England. The profits of chain
stores go out of the town, to big PLCs. The profits of local, independent
retailers get invested back into Bedford. For the health of the town
centre and the villages, out-of-town shopping centres must be curbed.
