Cycling and Walking
Some of Bedford's cycle ways are good. But they can be improved, and we need more. Too often they stop when the road gets narrow. That is just when a cycle way is needed most. Too often the cycle ways themselves are too narrow. Too often cyclists are told to 'give way' at every side turn and even for some private driveways.
Some people are worried about cyclists on the pavement. I say the answer is to provide enough good cycle ways and safe roads so cyclists feel safe without being on the pavement.
To make roads safer, I would make all residential streets a 20mph zone, except where they are part of through routes. If people aren't so scared of speeding cars, they are more likely to cycle, and more likely to walk routes that involve crossing roads. 'Walking buses' can get children to school safely. They will also help our children keep healthy.
We also need to make sure that pavements are kept clear. This will help those of us trying to push baby buggies to get along them. It will also help people with restricted vision walk along them without bumping into them, and help wheelchair users too.
